CarMax Inc. (KMX) has been experiencing some mixed performance and fluctuating share prices due to a number of factors. Primecap Management Co. CA and Connor Clark & Lunn Investment Management Ltd amongst others, reduced their stock positions in CarMax, while Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Group Inc. increased their shares in the company. The
stocks of CarMax have also outperformed its competitors on several occasions. This performance could be linked to CarMax's strong unit sales and margins in Q2 2025. Despite
moderating used-car prices benefiting CarMax and other leading retailers, high rates and supply issues reportedly affected the company in Q2. Simultaneously, it surpassed Q2 revenue estimates courtesy of higher unit sales. Goldman Sachs regards CarMax as a potential long-term AI stock set to rally eventually. However, it has underperformed compared to its peers indicating an over-valuation. Vanity metrics aside, CarMax has received mixed reviews from Wall Street, and given an average rating of 'Hold' from analysts.
JPMorgan has raised its price target for CarMax while maintaining its underweight sell rating.
