Swim race: how to prepare in 90 seconds
Swim races are short and every detail counts. Behind the blocks, nerves can make you tense. A short routine with the AHΞHA swim breath helps you get on the block calm and ready.
What happens in your body and mind
Before a race, swimmers often breathe too fast. A strong inhale, a short stop and a long exhale bring control. Picturing the start, turns and finish makes your race feel familiar.
Your 90-second routine with Steve
1. Arrive, 30 seconds. Breathe with Steve: Inhale 2s · hold 1s · exhale 9s. The first half of the video plays while you breathe in, the second half while you breathe out. The FLOW line shows you when to breathe, and the music follows your breath.
2. Visualize, 45 seconds. Five short scenes walk you through your swim race:
- Picture the water before your swim race. Its colour, its temperature, the line on the bottom.
- Feel the start: a strong entry, a long glide, a calm first breath.
- Find your stroke rhythm — long exhale into the water, quick inhale out.
- It gets hard. You lengthen the exhale and hold your technique.
- See yourself touch the wall. You swam your race.
3. Anchor, 15 seconds. Press your palms together. Say quietly: “Flow.” Use the same gesture later, in the real moment, with one long exhale.
When to use it
- During warm-up.
- Behind the blocks.
- Between heats and finals.

Why it works
Mental rehearsal, picturing a situation step by step before it happens, uses many of the same brain networks as the real action. Athletes, musicians and surgeons use it to prepare. Slow breathing with a longer exhale shifts the body towards its calming, parasympathetic side. AHΞHA puts both into one short routine you can repeat whenever you need it. Read the research.
