Job interview: how to prepare in 90 seconds

Most job interviews are decided in the first few minutes: how you walk in, how your first sentence sounds, how you handle the first hard question. Nerves are normal, but they can make your voice tight and your answers rushed. A short routine before the interview helps you arrive calm and sound like yourself.

What happens in your body and mind

Before an interview your body prepares for a challenge: the heart beats faster, breathing gets shallow, and the mind jumps between possible questions. A slow breath with a longer exhale gives your body the signal that you are safe. Picturing the interview step by step turns the unknown into something you have already walked through once.

Your 90-second routine with Lee

1. Arrive, 30 seconds. Breathe with Lee: Inhale 4s · hold 4s · exhale 5s · hold 1s. The first half of the video plays while you breathe in, the second half while you breathe out. The FLOW line shows you when to breathe, and the music follows your breath.

2. Visualize, 45 seconds. Five short scenes walk you through your job interview:

  1. Picture the place where your job interview happens. Notice the light, the temperature, the sounds.
  2. See yourself arrive a few minutes early. Shoulders low. Breath slow and quiet.
  3. The first moment: you make eye contact and your first sentence comes out calm and clear.
  4. A hard question comes. You pause, exhale, and answer in your own words.
  5. See the end: you leave knowing you showed who you really are.

3. Anchor, 15 seconds. Press thumb and index finger together. Say quietly: “Ready.” Use the same gesture later, in the real moment, with one long exhale.

Why it works

Mental rehearsal, picturing a situation step by step before it happens, uses many of the same brain networks as the real action. Athletes, musicians and surgeons use it to prepare. Slow breathing with a longer exhale shifts the body towards its calming, parasympathetic side. AHΞHA puts both into one short routine you can repeat whenever you need it. Read the research.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop shaking before an interview?

Breathe in for 4 seconds and out for 5 or longer, for about a minute. The long exhale lowers your heart rate. Then picture the first minute of the interview going well, so your mind has something concrete to hold on to.

Does this work for video interviews?

Yes. Do the 90 seconds a few minutes before you join the call, with the camera off. Many people find online interviews harder because there is no walk-in moment, and the routine creates one.

Is the routine free?

Yes. This routine is free and works in your browser, without an account. With a free account you can choose any coach, situation and music, and share sessions with friends.

Can I get a reminder before your job interview?

Yes. Install AHΞHA on your phone and set your own reminder times. A push message starts the routine with one tap.
