Chess time trouble: how to prepare in 90 seconds

Time trouble is where many chess games are lost. Panic makes you play fast and badly. A short routine helps you stay calm when the clock runs down.

What happens in your body and mind

When time runs out, adrenaline makes the hands shake and the eyes jump. A slow exhale between moves helps you keep simple, safe moves.

Your 90-second routine with Susan

1. Arrive, 30 seconds. Breathe with Susan: Inhale 4s · hold 4s · exhale 4s · hold 4s. The first half of the video plays while you breathe in, the second half while you breathe out. The FLOW line shows you when to breathe, and the music follows your breath.

2. Visualize, 45 seconds. Five short scenes walk you through time trouble:

  1. Picture the board and the clock before time trouble. Your hands are still.
  2. See your first moves unfold calmly, one by one.
  3. Your opponent plays something unexpected. You exhale and sit on your hands.
  4. Blunder check: before every move you ask, "What does this allow?"
  5. The clock runs low. You stay calm, pick a clear plan and play it.

3. Anchor, 15 seconds. Touch the edge of the table. Say quietly: “Check.” Use the same gesture later, in the real moment, with one long exhale.

Why it works

Mental rehearsal, picturing a situation step by step before it happens, uses many of the same brain networks as the real action. Athletes, musicians and surgeons use it to prepare. Slow breathing with a longer exhale shifts the body towards its calming, parasympathetic side. AHΞHA puts both into one short routine you can repeat whenever you need it. Read the research.
